What they discover is that the spacecraft was American and it had been transported back in time through a black hole and had ended up in the ocean. They continue to encounter many a hostile event until the situation for them becomes one testing their mental strength & their will to survive. Michael Crichton does a superb job of keeping us thinking and yet bewildered. As they strive to find solutions to who or what the entity is they come under attack by various creatures apparently guided by the sphere. On the whole Sphere is a probing and suspenseful book and is an absolutely "immersing" read!!!. The team of scientists consisting of the astute and intelligent Psychologist Dr. Norman Johnson, the critical and sarcastic mathematician Harold Adams, the excited and ever-optimistic Astrophysicist Theodore Fielding, and finally the paranoid biologist Elizabeth Halpern then proceed to do everything they can to figure out how to open the sphere. To the scene are rushed a team of scientists to unearth and reveal the spacecraft's hidden past. When Harry the mathematician finally figures out the puzzle and then ensues to enter the imposing sphere, the rest of the team find him hours later disoriented and lying sprawled on the floor. Things then turn very bizarre with the appearance of mysterious messages from an unknown entity on their computer screen.
