Net Force: The Ultimate Escape

             Tom Clancy creates parallels with the book Net Force and the Top Gun program due to his extreme interest in the military field. Tom Clancy wrote the Net Force book series with the aid of Steve Pieczenik. The Ultimate Escape was published by The Berkley Publishing Group located in New York, New York in 1999.
             The main purpose of the book is to entertain the reader by placing him in a unique, futuristic setting using elements from today to create a familiarity with the time period. The book, set in the year 2025, in the beginning focuses on a teenager named Julio Cortez. His father is running for president of his home country of Courteguay. There is a conspiracy to capture Julio and his family so the "right people" can be put into office. They are put into a virtual prison, which is a device put on your head that incapacitates the rest of one's body. Like a prison for one's mind. The major focus throughout the rest of the book is on a young man named Matt Hunter. Matt is a part of a group called the Net Force Explorers. The Net Force is a training program that uses virtual flight simulators to teach the users about past air battles. It is like a history class of the future using hands-on and "mind-on" resources. It is also a competition between kids around the world. It reminds me of the Top Gun program in today's Navy. While in the simulators the kids would be split into teams according to their nationality and try to "change history", as it were, by reenacting famous battles. The team with the last man or woman standing wins. In the Top Gun program the best pilots compete against each other to hone their dog-fighting, tactical, defense, and flying skills. At the end of the program the pilot with the most kills is awarded Top Gun status. In the book, the pilot who acquires the most points for kills and skills is awarded the title Ace of Aces.
