Net Force: The Ultimate Escape
Tom Clancy creates parallels with the book Net Force and the Top Gun program due to his extreme interest in the military field. Tom Clancy wrote the Net Force book series with the aid of Steve Pieczenik. The Ultimate Escape was published by The Berkley Publishing Group located in New York, New York in 1999. The main purpose of the book is to entertain the reader by placing him in a unique, futuristic setting using elements from today to create a familiarity with the time period. The book, set in the year 2025, in the beginning focuses on a teenager named Julio Cortez. His father is running for president of his home country of Courteguay. There is a conspiracy to capture Julio and his family so the "right people" can be put into office. They are put into a virtual prison, which is a device put on your head that incapacitates the rest of one's body. Like a prison for one's mind. The major focus throughout the rest of the book is on a young man named Matt Hunter. Matt is a part of a group called the Net Force Explorers. The Net Force is a training program that uses virtual flight simulators to teach the users about past air battles. It is like a history class of the future using hands-on and "mind-on" resources. It i
Clancy definitely has the ability to captivate his readers. He really hit the proverbial "nail on the head" with this book. His writing style was easily understandable and fun to read. This is why most of his books are military based as this one is. I find that his novels are always historically accurate, providing an extremely realistic experience. I really enjoyed this book and how Clancy tied everything together in the end. In the Top Gun program the best pilots compete against each other to hone their dog-fighting, tactical, defense, and flying skills. Tom Clancy is my favorite author and this book is why. Every time Julio enters the program, mercenaries are sent to kill him virtually not allowing him to enter the program again. Tom Clancy was not able to join the armed forces because of a failed eye test, but his deep interest in the military displaced his ambitions to become an author. Armed with Matt's information of Julio's danger, Matt's mom convinces the military to conduct a rescue operation to get Julio and his family out. At the end of the program the pilot with the most kills is awarded Top Gun status. He kept it believable in that everything that happened in this book will eventually be possible in reality.
