Causes of imperialism
The definition of imperialism is the ambition of a powerful nation to dominate the political, economic and cultural affairs of another nation or region. The question that has been asked is why in this period of history do all of a sudden European powers begin a blitz to imperialize. The answer has been debated upon, but has been concluded to be because of ideological, economic and political reasons on why imperialism occurred. Ideologically, there were 3 reasons for imperialism. The first is religion. This is mostly Christian missionaries, protestant and catholic alike who attempted to spread their beliefs to the people of the colonies. They set up schools and educated people about their respective Christianity. Another was Rudyard Kipling's, "White man's burden." This was the theory that the west was culturally advanc
Lenin agrees with Marx that capitalism is a necessary stage of socialism, but adds that imperialism is the last stage of capitalism and will cause a world revolution, which in fact happened (World War I). Colonies became the place were you dump off this product. The conference of Berlin in 1885 kept a balance of power by setting up the ground rules of the claiming of Asia and Africa. Social Darwinism said that those who acquire wealth was because of their superiority over the weak. When one country took a land another country took a different land and made it their colony to keep this balance of power. Darwin did not intend for it to be applied to society because there are different standards in human society. The British later took sedan for a similar reason. If a mother country is lacking some natural resource the colony could provide it along with others. Imperialism kept a balance of power. Darwin created a scientific theory, which explained survival of the fittest. Hitler strongly believed in this theory. From a political standpoint, imperialism was a positive. Economically, colonies were needed because of the industrial revolution. It says that colonies are safe havens for investment because you could build them up.
