Black like me

             In the words of Martin Luther King Jr. "An Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" What this quote meant was if we let one person mistreat another person, then everyone else will think it is the right thing to do. This ties in with Griffin's Black Like Me, because he is a middle-aged man who stains his skin black and travels to the Deep South as a Negro to experience first hand segregation and discrimination.
             John Howard Griffin wrote Black Like Me in the 1950s when everything was segregated into white and black in the Deep South. He wrote this book because he was curious to find out what it would be like to be a Negro and what adjustments he would have to undergo. In order to become a Negro, Griffin had to take special pills to darken his skin. After the treatment, for the rest of his body Griffin used black stain. Griffin purpose of writing the book was to close the gap between the blacks and whites. He was taking a walk in the other man's "shoes".
             In Griffin's book songs/poems, journal entries, and page breaks are some of the ways he organizes his book. Griffin uses songs/poems in his book to reinforce what he has just written about in the text.
             Way down South Mississippi, Cotton blossoms white in the sun.
             We all love our Mississippi; Here we'll stay where livin' is fun.
             The evening stars shine brighter, And glad is every dewy morn
             For way down South in Mississippi, Folks are happy they have been born.
             Griffin uses this song to show who Mississippi give off an image of unity or peace between the blacks and whites, when in reality that's not the real case. For example in the test is says how Griffin heard bout teens and sometimes adults out joy riding having a good time.
