Is embryo screening ethical?

             Embryo screening is a process that can result in a 'designer baby'. Designer baby is a journalistic term and is used by the media. It describes a child that has genetic make-up that has been selected or altered artificially. Ultimately, it means that parents will have more control over what their offspring will be like.
             This is a very controversial and current issue due to which there is a large media debate. Families most commonly use embryo screening if they already have a child who has a serious illness. This diagram shows the procedure. The mother is given fertility drugs, and the eggs that she produces are fertilised to produce embryos. These embryos are then analysed to find out if they have any genetic defects, and to see if their tissue is compatible with that of the older child. From this, multiple eggs are produced and the selected healthy embryos are injected into the uterus., and this leads to the birth of a genetically healthy baby, which is known as a saviour sibling. The blood in the umbilical cord of the newborn baby is then transfused into the older child.
             Ethical rules are rules on how to live. Most people generally accept these rules. However, different people may have different ethical values. This could depend on the country that they live in, their religion, or their upbringing.
             An alternate example is of Zain Hashmi, who suffers from beta-thalassamia, a similar disease in which the parents of Zain were allowed to use PGD to create a new child who did not have the disease. This was allowed by the HFEA, because the Hashmi parents were carriers of the disease, and so any of their future offspring will have a one in four chance of contracting the disease.
