Beyond all borders
It's done, it is all over. When he opened his eyes all around him was darkness, at least he thought he opened his eyes. The difference between reality and his imagination had become to him one and the same thing. He opened his eyes to a darkness that was unfamiliar to him. All he could see were vague images in his head but he couldn't make them out. His mind was full of thoughts and this unknown dimness made things harder to grasp. He remembered nothing of his present situation. Of course he had to have been dreaming there was no other explanation; all he had to do was wake up.Then it started softly, as if in a whisper. I could hear it faintly and tried to make out where it was coming from. The sound was filling the room and I had to listen hard. As I listened the sound started to become more distinct. It was coming from the left side of me. Where? I couldn't quite see, but I could hear it getting clearer, it became louder as each second passed. Then I could hear it clearly, at first I assumed it was the hands of a clock, ticking away but as it came nearer I realised that it was in fact clicking, just like the sound a man would make in an attempt to click his fingers. However this clicking wasn't from a m
Cold water, I could almost feel it against my face, the taste of fresh spring water made my lips feel dry and my body dehydrated. an, it was something else, it sounded like a switch was being turned off and on, off and on, continuously, as if the same beat was being hit on a drum. The sound of metal against metal did nothing but send shivers up my spine. Then it hit me, but no sooner had the metals stopped that this ear-splitting scream had come, now my fears were taking a hold of me and the scream seemed to be piercing my ears. The only thing left now was how I got here? I don't remember boarding a train; I noticed my hand trapped under a pile of books. The days were warm and the nights magnificent. I just needed to block it out, I needed it to stop. At that moment I began laughing, why? Because here I was, a 28 year old man, of medium height, weight and according to the table beside me I had been drinking yet I had no recollection of how and why I was on a train. Wherever that scream had come from it hadn't affected the lives of these people, but where was I? I knew my eyes were still closed, but did I really want to open them? My mind was full of thoughts. The sound of the birds all day and crickets by night, all rhythmical so that if you listened hard enough it almost sounded as if they were singing or playing a soft melody. I knew why I was here and I knew where I was going, everything was clear. I would make endless journeys to the countryside just to get some time alone. The sound was just like that of a knife being sharpened or anything else that could be harmful. I could hear the fast running stream and almost make out where it was coming from. All I had to do was cover my ears, maybe then it would just pass.
