Use of Animals in Research Should be Limited

Animal testing has been used since the beginning of scientific medicine research and most of the advancement in medical science has been related to the use of animal testing. Without the help of animal research, many would not have survived diseases that were once fatal to the human population. Believing that torturing animals is cruel, some scientists suggest other solutions to replace animal testing and all of those solutions are found to be insufficient. In the "A Scientist: 'I am the Enemy' " article, Ron Kline lists few solutions and he explains why those solutions can't replace animal testing, solutions such as "experiments on human beings ... or...using computer modeling that can simulate animal experiments". Both sources are unreliable and impossible. Therefore, there is no doubt that animal testing may be the only method that would greatly improve medical science in finding new methods and to provide society with the best medical breakthroughs to improve our lives. Animal-rights activists suggest that the use of animals is immoral and scientifically incorrect because animals, just as humans, have rights. One of the animal-rights activists, Roger Caras, explains the animal rights in "We Must Find Alternatives to Animals

" If we cannot use animals, what other option do we have for medical research and advancement? This question is not easy to answer. Most would wonder why we do not use humans for research on human diseases. When a new drug is developed, it is not a good idea to use it first on humans because of the possibility that it may cause harm rather than good. No other methods including human testing and computer modeling can be as accurate as animal testing in medical research. Doing some research in http://sztybel. It is known that humans live in different lifestyles as well as environments, leaving them insufficiently homogenous to be tested upon. html#speciesism, even the "most sophisticated computer model cannot mimic the complicated systems that occur in the living system". From taking Statistics in high school, I know that the only way to get effective data result is through an experiment in a controlled testing environment. animals have the right not to have pain, fear or physical deprivation inflicted upon them. But the truth of the matter is that even if animal testing causes death, and physical harm to the animals, the reason behind animal testing is to ensure a better quality of life for people in our society. If human testing and alternative methods are difficult and at times even impossible for obtaining valid scientific data, then what else can we use in research that can help to better and save lives? The attempts in answering this question leave us with the discussion on animal testing. The incredible medical advances, made using animal testing, listed in "A Scientist: 'I am the Enemy' " article, include "vaccines, antibiotics, insulin and drugs to treat heart disease, hypertension and stroke, and improved surgical techniques". Scientists can not solely rely on computer modeling methods because, as I researched in http://sztybel.
