To what extent are Brits and Great Britain stereotypical or
As "Four Weddings and a Funeral" is a relatively new film, it allows the viewers to take a closer look at the situation in contemporary Britain,-the people, traditions, customs and some national stereotypes. It shows the country and the people from the point of view of a typical Britisher rather than someone who lives outside the U.K.Consequently,this image of Brits and Britain tends to be a bit idealised on one hand, and stereotypical on the other -the film shows both good sides of the British and also contains the slightly stereotyped view of them. Meanwhile, the vices of the main characters definitely seem to be toned down at least to some point ; also certain aspects of the country's image is different than it is in for real.Another important issue is the fact, that the movie shows rather incomplete view of the British society-mostly middle class is depicted here and it is only during the funeral when we can see also the working class. To find out how true is the image of Great Britain presented in the " Four Weddings and a Funeral" a few common stereotypes should be examined, confronted and compared with the film. Let us now consider the setting and the main characters. The first wedding is set in a small town in the r
As far as the main characters are concerned, they can be divided into three main types: there are young unmarried men, women, and a couple of eccentrics. Another eccentric but this time a man is Garreth. He is also fond of garment in bright colours and is sometimes too open-like Scarlett. There is a number of situations in the movie to support this statement. Also the weather is presented in such way-there is no sign of rain or fog-in fact, it rains only once during the whole film. On the other hand behaviour and attitudes of the middle class are enough to state clearly that the Brits and Great Britain are presented in the film a little bit stereotypically but definitely not in an exagerrated manner. It does not mean, however, that they are presented in as too idealised or just the opposite. Taking for example Charles or Tom one may say that young Brits are a bit awkward and shy when it comes to expressing feelings; With Charles it is especially visible when he did not really know how to confess his love to Carrie. As for the women presented in the film the good example may be Scarlett-Charles's flatmate. It can be said, therefore, that the image of Britain as a country seem to be idealised. ural area; the wedding reception is held in the garden and this, as well as the third wedding- that of Carrie and Hamish in his castle in Scotland with Scottish dances, bagpipes and kilts-create the picturesque and almost pastoral view-simmilar to those seen on postcard. Another important problem is the Brtish attitude towards Americans. Tom, on the other hand delivered the unsuccessful speech during the second wedding. First off the attitude to marriage and relationships between men and women: Charles's view is that relatiosnhips with women do not necesarily have to come down to marriage.
