Chicago
The musical production of Chicago is based around the murder and greed that took place, in Chicago, during the 1920s. An important aspect of the mis-en-scene in this film is the make-up and costumes of all the characters. The costume designer did a very nice job of showing the fashion and style of this time period in the costumes of the characters. The women of this time period were dressed in little clothes that showed lots of skin. These women were also called flappers because of their risque clothing. At the beginning of the movie we are introduced toVelma Kelly. She is a performer in a nightclub who dresses in colors of mostly black and other bold colors. She is a very strong character, who has complete fearlessness. Another very important character is Roxie Hart. Throughout the movie the audience sees her in the real world
As you can see, objects and props used in the film gives clues to the audience about the overall setting. During Roxie's trial, she gained a large amount of fame. During Roxie's first night in jail, she is introduced to the other female murders. The murdered men " had it coming all along," because they abused the women. " She does favors for inmates as long as there is money involved. In the real world she is usually dressed in neutral tones. When we first meet Velma Kelly she is getting out of the cab and walking into the club. A second technique used in this film is sound. She is described as the mother of the jail and "when you're good to Mama, Mama's good to you. Their song describes each woman's crime and how it wasn't their faults. Dialogue, music, and noise are all very important to a film's sound. Setting allows the audience to understand where the film is taking place and props give clues to where. Before she enters the club she rips off part of a sign that says Velma and Veronica, so it just reads Velma. At the beginning of the film there is a shot of the Chicago skyline, which includes the Wrigley and Tribune buildings, as well as the EL train.
