Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a poem about the code of chivalry and a knight's obligation to follow it. After critically reading this poem I began evaluating the behavior of Sir Gawain. I have decided that Sir Gawain behaves well enough to be retained as a knight of the Round Table. I came to this decision by determining which chivalry codes he follows and which ones he breaks. One of the first chivalry codes that I came across when evaluating Sir Gawain was: Always be brave. Sir Gawain followed this code to the best of his ability. When the Green knight burst into the hall were King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table were feasting and presents his challenge. These knights are supposedly the bravest in all the land yet, only Sir Gawain accepts this challenge (page 160). Proving already that he is braver then every knight at the Round Table. Not only that but, after he gives the Green Knight his blow, and a year and a day later he is brave enough to travel to the Green Knight's castle to receive his bl
Sir Gawain followed all of these rules with the up most standard and never strayed. These are the reasons why he should remain a knight of the Round Table. In the summary on page 162 it states that, "Sir Gawain leaves just before Christmas to honor his pledge to the Green Knight. The lord then proposes a game were Sir Gawain and him exchange what he receives for the day. Sir Gawain also respects the lady by not falling to her temptation and sleeping with her. Sir Gawain was only following the chivalry code by not giving the lord everything he received. "And she gave him the gift with great pleasure and begged him, for her sake not to say a word and to keep it hidden from her lord and he said he would. Sir Gawain was faithful to his pledge to the Green Knight as well to King Arthur, and to the Lord of the castle were he is staying. He wanted to respect the ladies wishes and not dishonor her or himself by breaking his pledge. Sir Gawain receives only kisses the first two days of the game and gives them to the lord at the end of the night in exchange for what the lord caught while hunting. In conclusion after reading the Code of Chivalry and evaluating Sir Gawain in this poem I have concluded that Sir Gawain should be retained as a knight of the Round Table. " (Page 165, lines162-164) So by not giving the lord the sash he received he was not breaking the chivalry code but, rather abiding by it. The next chivalry code that Sir Gawain followed with the up most standards was: To be faithful to your pledge, never lie and deceive. The next chivalry code I came across was to respect and defend ladies; fight for them in good cause; be humble before them; never do anything to dishonor them. " On his way to do this he comes across a beautiful castle, in which the lord of the castle invites him to stay awhile.
