In a Split Second

             I slowly opened my heavy set eyes and looked at the bright, white lights gleaming in front of me. I tried to recollect what had just happened but it all happened too fast. I was to a point of confusion and state of disbelief on what had just occurred. I laid there and kept telling myself to wake up, that it was all just a nightmare waiting to be over with.
             I was excited when my mom told me that I could go see my boyfriend. His name was Matt and we lived an hour from each other so it was always a rush when we knew that we could see each other. I hopped in my new car that my parents had just given me at the beginning of my senior year and I was off like a bullet. There are a million little twists and turns on the roads leading to his town. It is almost as if you are driving through the mountains. Most of the roads have no shoulder and you can only drive a maximum of 40 miles per hour or you will lose control of your car by running off the shoulder.
             I arrived at Matt's house at around 4:45 that afternoon. It was a cold day in January, yet there was no snow to be seen. Just bitter cold. We sat around and did the usual, watch TV that is. We went to his town's video store called Movie Land, which is one of those rink-a-dink, hole-in-the-wall places that has that tanning bed and antique smell right when you walk in the door. We rented a couple of movies that night and watched them in his room. I kept drifting asleep during the movies. I knew that I should have headed home already, but I felt that time with Matt was short and wanted to stay and make the best of it as long as possible.
             "You need to head home soon," whispered Matt.
             "I will, after awhile. I will just call my mom and tell her that I am going to be running late."
