Why did J.B. Priestley write An Inspector Calls?
             • He wrote it when the second world war was just over, and was probably trying to make people see that a socialist government would work.
             • He wrote it to voice his socialist views.
             • He is writing in a very critical way about the class system, showing how it is the upper classes cause these problems.
             • He is also speaking about women's place in society.
             At the beginning Sheila acts as an upper class person, and is very happy to be getting married to Gerald.
             At the end she has changed the most, she fell the furthist.
             • Changes lots - jobs in particular, also changes names.
             • Strong individual, sense of justice, stands up for what she believes in.
             • Lively character, able to have fun with fellow workers.
             • She falls in love with Gerald, and seems to lose her independence.
             • At the beginning she seems to be quite independent, and as the play continues on she seems to become dependent on upper class, rich men, and her independence seems to diminish.
             • Rebellious character, sleeps with the women of the town, drinks, steals money.
             Page 9 - takes the decanter and helps himself.
             [Becomes very violent and forces himself on women when drunk.]
             Page 31 - Page 32 - The inspector speaks of Eric drinking.
             Page 51 - stage direction, after hes been for a walk, about him drinking.
             Page 6 + Page 16 - Mr. Birling and Eric tend to disagree on most matters, with Eric bringing up queries and doubting his father's answers.
             Page 54 - Believes he doesn't get enough affection from his father, shown by his comment about him not being a man to go to.
             Treated like a child, and does what he does to try and prove he's a man.
