Why Arabs and Jews Fight
The Arab-Israeli conflict is a complicated spider web of events. It is an argument over who should have control over the land that is currently Israel. Both sides of the debate have valid points and very strong feelings about it. Israel, the Jews, feel that they should have the land because it was the land that was promised to them by God. Palestine, the Arabs, say that their ancestors, the Canaanites, lived there first and it should be their land. Many incidents have occurred causing the problem to complicate and escalate. Around the times of the World Wars are two of times that the disagreement between these groups came to a head. Both of these troubled people have an ancient connection with the land that is now Israel. The Jews claim this is the land given to them by God, the land on which their ancestors instated a society based on Judaism, a land they could call home. The Arab nation felt that they were being pushed into the background of their homeland, the land that the Jew had left a long time ago. Some Arabs even acted out in violence toward the Jews confusing and angering them as well. Palestine also set up a culture and economy of their own. There are many more reasons these nations claim this land. he descendants of the Canaanites, took over the now deserted land, calling themselves Palestinians. When Hitler came into power the Jews felt that they needed to flee Europe. During World War I, Palestine was an English colony with mostly Arabs. When the Jews were turned away by every other country in the world they turned homebound. Both find all of these things in this special land we now call Israel. The Balfour Declaration, declared that they would set up an "establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavors to facilitate the achievement of the object" (Balfour). Britain confused everything and turned a peaceful land into the "Twice Promised Land". The Husayn-McMahon Correspondence came to what Husayn thought, was an agreement that Palestine would be an independent country after the war- if they attacked the Ottoman Empire, providing help in the war. When the war ended, both nationalist groups were expecting to receive Palestine. On the contrary, in 1917 Britain also made a proposition to the Jewish Zionists. It is hard to say which side has the better claim.
