DBQ-Southern Secession

With no doubt was the secession of the eleven southern states a very important event in our country's history. Resulting in Civil War, which lasted four years, leaving over one-half million deaths, destruction, and great sectional hatred, has affected our country till today. The great question is what caused the southern states to secede? If slavery truly was the culprit behind this, if it was to what extent was it? Was the person leading our country at the time in fault for southern secession? If any what were other factors? All of these questions are still debated today. Thoughts of secession arouse when the Wilmot Proviso was passed. The Wilmot Proviso stipulated that neither slavery nor involuntary servitude shall ever exist in any territory to be acquitted from Mexico. This made southerners, who supported the Mexican American war, feel betrayed as if they were not being treated fairly. This angered southerners, so John C. Calhoun came into defense and argued that the territories were the property of the states together and not the United States Federal Government, so therefore they had no right to prohibit in any territory any type of property that was legal in any of the states. In response the North in defense argued that

Senator Charles Sumner made a speech "The Crime against Kansas" in which he denounced slavery but also made degrading comments of South Carolina Senator Andrew Butler. In the North people were outraged but in the South, Brooks was seen as a hero. This shows that the South is in real disagreement with the North. Southerners saw this resistance of the North to the law as a proof that the North wanted to abolish slavery. This angered the North because they saw this as breaking of old agreements or laws. The North and the South disputed over other territories as well as Texas. John Brown's Raid made non-slave holding southerners to support secession. The election was only the last straw, but the cause was hostility manifested by legislation in states (DOC 7). After so many years we are still affected politically, socially, and economically today by the Secession of the southern states that led to Civil War. Violence spread as far as into Congress. The strengthening of the Fugitive Slave Law enraged anti-slavery Northerners, they even caused riots, and they thought the law was unfair. Another issue that made south and North hate each other even more was the Dread Scott Case. While Southern Democratic Party platform was everybody has the right to settle with slaves with no exception (DOC 1). Kansas and Nebraska were a big issue between North and South.
