The old and new penology: public discourse
The old penology is different from the new in many ways. The new penology can use the ideas from the progressive era in order to help make decisions on how prisoners and offenders should be taken care of. The success of the progressive era was great and the institutional legacy remains today. The old penology focuses on a sociological view point where as the new penology directs it attention to risk management and the system itself. Although the old and new penology are in correlation with one another and the ideas from both help shape the way things are today. The old penology looks at social reforms the relationship between individuals and communities. The new penology is an increase on reliance of imprisonment, surveillance and custody. When comparing the two one should look at the discourse, success and objectives of the old and new penology systems.The old penology can be divided into different eras, the main era being the progressive era (1880-1920). Crime was viewed as an antisocial act. For a variety of reasons, crime and other forms of deviance came to be viewed as threats to the social order. There are major differences in the two, as stated above. There is however a connection and the new penology are on the rise of public discourse. Legislation to imprison violent repeat offenders for life repeatedly invoked the term career criminal.
