What is schizophrenia? Schizophrenia is a mood disorder that effects the way a person acts, reacts and the way they look at the world around them. About 2 million Americans suffer from schizophrenia yet we do not know much about it. Of that 2 million 150,000 of them are in jail and another 150,000 are homeless. Forty percent of schizophrenia cases do not receive any treatment at all . If you ask people almost everyone knows or has heard what schizophrenia is. In this paper I want to provide an overview of schizophrenia; that is the cause of schizophrenia, the symptoms, how to diagnosis it, how to treat it, and then provide you with two case studies to show the complexity of Schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a very complex disease and somewhat scary, but it can be controlled and treated, and the best defense is being informed and knowing the disease. The first thing that people need to know to help with the cure of schizophrenia is the causes. There is no single cause of schizophrenia. It involves many different factors. Diagnosis has six steps, Characteristic symptoms, Social/Occupational dysfunction, Duration, Schizoaffective and Mood disorder exclusion, Substance/general medical condition exclusion, and Relationship to a Pervasive Developmental Disorder . Treatment comes in two main forms Psychotherapy and Antipsychotic medications. Often times we see people talking to themselves or something of that manner and we are inclined to make fun or stare; now we know that this is no game, but rather a very serious illness that have affected these people's lives greatly. The complexity of the disease is again shown because there are three to four different types of symptoms. On case of Schizophrenia that is a true story is comes from the movie "A Beautiful Mind" . Substance/general medical condition exclusion is not the physiological effects of substance abuse or medication. The causes can be so simple, yet can trigger a disease that will leave the patient feeling helpless. They become more apparent once the positive symptoms have responded to medication. This disease has so many parts to it, it is almost unimaginable to believe someone could live with it. A type of low potency is Promazine, medium potency, Droperidol, and high potency, Pimozide . They are called Positive because they are added on to the person's experience and behavior. Although a Schizophrenic his intelligence is incomprehensible, almost mind-boggling. Potency refers to how much of the drug must be ingested by the patient, not how strong or affective the actual drug is. For some reason or another it seems teens today have more of a struggle dealing with problems they face and often their depression is the onset of Schizophrenia.
