My Greed

             It was opening day of a much anticipated soccer season and I was to be starting as the lead forward for the Hoover High Patriots. This was my favorite time of the year. I had the wind blowing in my face, the smell of fresh cut grass and the feel of brand new soccer cleats on my feet. I waited on the line with my feet in the freshly laid chalk for the official to blow the whistle. After the zebra eventually tooted his horn, I quickly darted for the ball. Once I obtained it, I began to head towards the opposing goal. As I dribbled down the pitch I heard distant cries screaming, "Pass the ball, pass the ball." I paid no attention however; I was concentrating on how I would get around the four defenders in front of me. "Pass the ball, pass the ball!" They continued to chant but I still ignored them. I managed to elude one of the defense men but before I knew it, one of the other defenders stole the ball and cleared it half-way down the other side of the field.
             As soon as my team obtained possession of the ball, all I could think about was for them to put the ball to me. I began to chant, "Pass me the ball, pass me the ball." After a moments arrest I was relieved to have the ball back in my possession and I began to charge down the field once again. In my mind, I was too good to be stopped by this lousy opposing defense, the last time was just a fluke, so I continued to ignore the screams of my teammates to the left and right of me yell, "Pass the ball, Pass the ball."
             My actions out there on the soccer field that day were a lot like the actions of the head officials of Enron. I was greedy for control of the ball and the glory that would follow my superior ball handling skills and anticipated goals.
