Great Gatsby
In the novel, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, many significant events lead you to compare and contrast. The main character, Gatsby, has an ultimate dream of dating Daisy Buchanan. Tom, Daisy's husband, is the type of guy who is much more careless and already has the American Dream at his possession. Gatsby, whom views women in a much more respectable perspective, unlike Tom, who has a different social status among them. They have diverse personality traits, Tom is careless and ruins the lives of many where as Gatsby seems to be kind, but in his drive to achieve goals can become unscrupulous. In their mannerism quality, Gatsby will often reuse the quote "old sport" and Nick states that Tom leans aggressively forward. However, wealth isn't a factor for either of these two characters, although, they each got their riches in a different way. Each of these characters has a goal in life, reaching, and maintaining the American Dream. Tom whose life came much more easier than Gatsby, was born into wealth. On the other hand, Gatsby had a life full of crime. He joined up with crime lord Meyer Wolfshiem in order to become a millionaire. Tom came from a wealthy family; even in college, at a young age, To
During that evening, him and myrtle get into a little fuss because she is jealous of Daisy. As for Gatsby, he had to hard earn his money the hard way, so he is more careful with his spending even though he kind of wastes it on impressing Daisy with parties and his mansion. Gatsby, a bootlegger, earned his cash by dealing with Wolfshiem, and mainly selling his alcohol. Tom is a sweet man toward Myrtle, his secret mistress, in which they both have sexual visions for one another. Tom is always rude and could care less on what others think. He cares only about getting what he wants and not caring whom he takes down in the process. First, Tom is born into wealth and always has something to fall back on which is money if Daisy were ever to leave him. Gatsby wouldn't have an affair with any woman that had a husband, unlike Tom. In conclusion, due to the fact that each character is really wealthy, I believe this reflects on their personality. This seems to be true because before Gatsby goes off to fight in World War I, his romantic lover at the time is Daisy. Before going to war, Gatsby isn't wealthy at all so while at war Tom is clearly in the way of Gatsby's love for Daisy. Tom already has his wife Daisy, and still chooses to pamper another woman, which is Myrtle. Tom is a careless man who is violent, and is willing to hurt any person; he has to have it his way. Gatsby is willing to do any thing to accomplish his goal; he even has a green light he seeks at night that resembles his love for Daisy. Gatsby is also a generous man; although this is probably due to that fact that he is trying to win over Daisy.
