Massage Therapy

             Massage, the art of touch, is as old as time itself. We are born with the basic instincts of massage, as are apes and other animals. The benefit of rubbing aching muscles and hurt limbs comes to us as naturally as breathing air. The first known accounts of massage date back to 1400 B.C. at the start of the Shang Dynasty in China where massage was commonly used in medical practices (Wischik). Among its many purposes and advantages, massage soothes achy muscles, helps heal injuries, strengthens baby's muscles and relieves stress. To me, massage is not only a way to soothe the muscles and relieve the everyday stresses of society, massage is a way to connect with others through the common practice of touch. We have needed touch in our lives since the first seconds after our birth, so it's not surprising that we would seek out touch in the form of massage. For my project I will need to have a basic understanding of the three different types of massage that my mentor practices and what they are used for, the tools I will need to be using when I am practicing massage, and how to promote a massage therapy business. It is my hope that, through this paper, I can learn and pass on a basic understanding of massage and its purpose in today's society. I will cover the history of massage, the types of massage and their uses, the tools needed for massage, the role of massage in today's society, and the career aspects of massage.
             Massage has had a colorful and meaningful past throughout the world. From the earliest accounts of massage in China in 1400 B.C. massage has had a role in societies around the world. India, in contrast to China, used massage on a more sensual and erotic level. By using the techniques of Kama Sutra to calm and elevate a person's mood, massage took on a new perspective in the Indian culture.
