Technology Equals Workplace Stress

             How an organization transforms its inputs into outputs is what I learned to "technology" to be. The term "technology" has been used by economists, managers, consultants, and business analysts to describe machinery and equipment that use sophisticated electronics and computers to produce those outputs. It is plainly put; technology is any equipment, tool, or operating methods that are designed to make work more efficient. All the new technologies in the workplace substitute machinery for human labor in transforming inputs into outputs. For example, automated teller machines (ATM's) has replaced tens of thousands of tellers in banks. Many cars, if not all, now come with onboard computers that diagnose in seconds problems that mechanics used to take hours to diagnose. I also learned that IBM has a plant in Austin, Texas, that can produce laptop computers without a single worker. However, how is technology equal stress?
             First one must know what the meaning of stress is. Stress is a force or influence one feels when faced with opportunities, constraints, or demands that one perceives to be both uncertain and important. Stress can be caused by a number of factors called stressors. Factors that create stress can be grouped into two major categories – organizational and personal that directly affect employees and ultimately, their jobs. As one may know, personal stressors may consist of family matters and financial problems while organizational stressors may consist of work overload, organizational restructuring, and technology which I will attempt to tie together.
             How does technology equal stress? In an organization, information technological (IT) advances provoke stress because it causes change. Employee's job skill requirements will increase.
