Louisiana Purchase
"I like to dream of the future, better then the history of the past". This is a quote from Thomas Jefferson while in the struggle of his decision over the territory of Louisiana. In October of 1803 Thomas Jefferson, the President of the United States, purchased the vast Louisiana territory from the French. The territory totaled over 5 hundred million acres, spreading from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains and from New Orleans to the border of Canada. The cost was 60 million Frances or around 15 million U.S dollars. This would bring the U.S deeper in to debt and it made many northeastern states furious with Jefferson's purchase of the territory. They thought that it was unconstitutional, so the states stated to riot and protest against Jefferson. Although fighting an internal conflict the United States benefited from Jefferson's decisionFrom 1682 to 1763 the French had owned the territory of Louisiana. The French and Indian war broke out and lasted from 1754 to 1763. After the French lost to England King Louis XV of France had decided to get rid of Louisiana. The French did not legally own Louisiana. Frances decision to sell and Jefferson's decision to buy the territory shaped the destiny of America. Carlos Irujo, the minister of Spain, clamed that the United States was purchasing stolen goods. Realizing the size of the navy the Spanish backed down and let the French proceed with the deal. There was a verbal promise, not to sell it unless the Spanish were willing to buy it back. Spain's most feared enemy was now only east of the river. So he had Spanish citizens get the Indians to attack the Americans. He secretly helped the Americans fearing that if England found out they would come attack Louisiana. Secretly in 1800 the Spanish had given the territory back to the French. We gained full power of the Mississippi, and we double in size. Now farmers had no way of shipping goods and it cut off all trade to the North Eastern coast. The Spanish people were begging that Charles III would take the land and in the final Peace Treaty of 1763 Spain acquired Louisiana. arles III of Spain with the territory of Louisiana for helping the French in the French and Indian war.
