             Freedom, personal autonomy, and responsibility for others.
             Fredrick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs and Black Elk all shared a vision of freedom. All they wanted to do was share their freedom with their love ones and their community, and they went about doing it in their own ways. They were determined to reach them no matter how far down the road they had to go. Douglass and Jacobs both went through similar problems with slavery and what they did to gain their freedom. Both were slaves the only difference was their sex. Black Elk on the other hand wanted freedom not only for himself but for everyone, and that was his mission to accomplish. Whereas, Douglass wanted to gain freedom for himself and Jacobs wanted freedom for herself and her children.
             Fredrick Douglass was born a slave in February 1818 on Holmes Hill Farm. Fredrick's mother, Harriet Baily worked in the cornfields near the Holmes Hill. He did not know much of his father except the fact that he was white. There were rumors as a child that the master Aaron Anthony was his father. His mother was required to work long hours in the field so Douglas was sent to live with his Grandmother. During his child years he did not see himself as a slave but later on gradually learned, when his grandmother would speak of Old Master with fear. One day he and his grandmother took a journey and Fredrick was told to join his siblings, it was there that he learned the reality of the slave system.
             Fredrick arrived at the Auld Home. His duties were to run errands and to care for the Auld's infant son, Tommy. Fredrick's mistress, Sophia Auld a religious woman who consistently read aloud from her bible taught him the alphabet and how to read his first few words. She was excited about his progress and decided to let her husband know. He was furious and told her it was unlawful to teach a slave how to read because if a slave learn how to read and write they would disobey their master ...
