However, when Allan remarried the following year, Poe lost all hope of further assistance from him and was expelled from the Academy for infraction of numerous minor rules. During 1815-1820, Poe and his orphan family lived in England where he attended Manor School at Stoke Newington. Because of the deathbed plea of his foster mother, Poe reconciled with Allen, which resulted in an honorable discharge from the army and an appointment to West Point in 1830. In 1820 he then moved back to America and after continuing schooling in Richmond, he attended the University of Virginia. , had had somewhat of a less successful career on the stage; primarily due to alcohol. Although he was never legally adopted, Poe took Allan's name for his middle name to become part of his new family. He showed remarkable scholastic ability in classical and romance languages but was forced to leave the university after only eight months because of quarrels with Allan over his gambling debts. David died close to 1810 and his mother Elizabeth Hopkins Poe in 1811 after moving Poe, his brother, and sister to Richmond, Virginia. He was the orphaned into the home of his godfather, a Richmond merchant named John Allan. Poverty soon forced him to enlist in the army. His mother, Elizabeth Arnold Poe, had attained some prominence as a leading lady in certain plays, however his father, David Poe, Jr.
