Genetic Engineering

Eugenics was first described as "science of improving the stock" in 1883 by Sir Francis Galton. Webster describes it as "the science that deals with the improvement of hereditary qualities of a race or breed." Others may perceive eugenics to be selective breeding. Adolph Hitler praised American eugenics in Mein Kampf, and then convinced his nation that defects should be segregated by eradication. After World War II, many universities renamed their departments, from the Department of Eugenics, to the Department of Genetic Engineering. Since then, it is generally agreed that eugenics has not been very successful and may cause harm to future generations. (Smith 47). To grasp the understanding of genetic engineering, one must have a general knowledge of how the alteration process is successful. (Funk and Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia) Genetic engineering is the manipulation of DNA. Restriction enzymes are important to this process that are made by various species of bacteria. Restriction enzymes are able to recognize a specific sequence of the chain of chemical units, referred to as nucleotide bases. The nucleotide bases that make up the DNA molecule can then cut the DNA at that location and join with other e

Each will be enhanced with specific genes to allow them to excel in ways not even conceivable in nature's lottery. Parents may have the option of choosing new or different enhancements for their children. (Torr 109)Scientists are now able to break down fundamental genetic barriers by randomly inserting together the genes of non-related species. Like nuclear power, genetic engineering is not a neutral technology. Those in favor of genetic engineering believe Biology's strength comes from being able to read our genetic records, and cracking our genetic codes is a big progress in our scientific era. With time, genetic distance between "superior" and "inferior" will grow. Eventually, there will be as much of a romantic interest between the genetically rich and genetically poor as human to chimpanzee. Some envision a small segment of the population to be engineered to "perfection". " Controversial issues such as this will continue to influence not only the medical and research practices, but also society as a whole. Only the wealthy will be able to afford the costly procedures of genetic engineering. The benefits of genetic engineering are very great, but the dangers are also present. With these many hazards, it is hard to accept this new technology. Restriction enzymes and ligases together allow the cutting and reassembling of portions of DNA. One such application is cloning.
