Taming of the shrew

             What type of woman does Shakespeare want us to think Katherina is, and how do you interpret her submission to Pertuchio's taming?
             Over the years audiences have changed and modified their views, therefore their opinions have changed towards Katherina.
             Katherina's personality is very abrupt and strong; this is due to her father's favouritism towards here younger sister Bianca. Early we realise that he is using Bianca's marriage potential as a means of getting Katherina married off. Shakespeare wants us to think that Katherina is in the way, as Baptista wants her to get married and settled so that Bianca can do the same.
             When we first see Katherina we can see that she is a very independent and out spoken girl. If someone in Shakespeare's times were to read or watch the play, this wouldn't be seen as normal. Shakespeare wants us to think that she is devious and unusual.
             Latter on in the play Katherina talks to Baptista about favouritism and revenge. This shows that she notices Batista's love for Bianca is more than his love for her. This may show a softer side to Katherina as she takes notice of her father's favoured child.
             When Katherina first meets Petruchio, he compliments her, she acts as if she is not interested but she is really intrigued because no one has flattered her like this before. She also argues with him and hits him; I think by doing this she is showing her emotions for him in a different way.
             On the wedding day Katherina shows her true feelings when she cries and walks out. This shows that Katherina feels ashamed on in front of her family and friends. It also shows that by this point her feelings for Petruchio, despite what she says or does.
