The 21-year-old drinking age is really not necessary. People, especially teenagers 18-21 years old are going to do what they want, when they want, usually without considering the consequences. Why must there be a certain age set for everything? Who determines when the exact time in a person's life to drive, view R-rated movies, smoke cigarettes, or drink alcohol is? Why can't a person decide this on their own? If a person is "legally" considered an adult at the age of 18, then a person should "legally" be able to buy, sell, rent, or do whatever they feel they need to do at that age, too! You still cannot buy tobacco products. However, even though you are considered "grown-up", you are still restricted in many ways. You ARE old enough to go to real jail when you're 18, right? So, adults caught driving under the influence or causing other public alcohol-related incidences would get their share or adult punishment - jail time. This is another instance where fake ids come in. If you aren't mature enough to know not to drive when you've been drinking, then you don't deserve the freedom to say so. Most clubs have even upped the age to get in to 19-21. Usually, the bad consequences aren't even considered. Finally, responsibility comes along with maturity. Why should adults have to stoop to such an immature level when they are supposed to be mature? Secondly, people will do what they want to do when they want to do it. Why shouldn't you have ALL your rights when you're an adult? It's wrong not to! . They may even have older friends to buy things for them or "hook them up". That goes hand-in-hand with maturity.
