childhood
"Quiet, your going to wake them up," my sister hisses at me as we shimmy out of the window and onto the roof. The damp night air hits me as I slide silently off the roof, and onto the log stack piled just high enough to be of use on a night like tonight. The sweet smell of freshly cut grass fills my nostrils, and I take a deep breath, suddenly excited. We run swiftly across the grass as silently as rabbits scurrying from the ever present predators. "The moon is low tonight," I think, "just enough light to see a few feet in front of us." As we make our way around the corner, a couple more kids join us. Among them is my best friend, Olivia, panting heavily, for she has run five blocks, and Michael, her brother, the oldest and wisest of us all. We walk in silence, nervous, yet knowing what is to come. How different the world looks at night! Come to us Archie, we want to help. At least that was what I had thought during that summer when the air was soft, and the colors bright. Soon we all start chanting; it is as if a certain power is inside of us all, and we are no longer 7 beings, but one, chanting louder and louder and with growing enthusiasm. We were so close to Archie, if only we had a few more seconds, if only Michael hadn't sneezed! But he had, and we all went home dragging our feet, but agreed to try it again next week just the same. There always had been 'next week,' and there always would be. This is always the most nerve wrecking portion of the trip. Yet, adulthood brings the dreadful sense of reality and slowly but surly our seance group disbanded. The trees open up, portraying a large clearing, and a magical bonfire(every flashlight in the neighborhood), surrounded by three kids, the rest of the group, and some of the best friends I have known thus far. The moon that once seemed so bright now comes in thin streams through the canopy above us. We had our own place there, where anything was possible. We pause here, as always, just to savior one last look at the open sky before we step into the engulfing darkness.
