Examining Yourself One of the most controversial issues in today’s society is body modification. Everyone does modify themselves in some way, shape, or form. There’s obviously no completely natural body walking around anywhere in our culture. For basic hygiene and health reasons we need to modify our bodies in some ways. When people modify themselves through diet or exercise they are promoting their health, which is a positive way to change the way we look. In the big scheme of things preserving healthiness and remaining content with our status in life should be the ultimate goal through body modification. However, when someone alters their body other than for their health or basic needs it becomes too extreme. This would be an unexciting world if people didn’t bring about major differences in their true bodies. Still, sometimes people make these drastic changes with the wrong intentions. They mistakenly aim to conform to a standard of how others perceive normal. Voluntary surgery, for example, is not a logical or sane idea unless it’s used to correct features of our body that were originally present. The positive and negative ways people try to develop their self-image is due, in large part, to the impulse of society itself. Once a person takes that step to surgically rename their body, they lose their sense of identity. The double-edged sword to this, of course, is to remain physically active as possible and discipline our selves to promoting good health. Having an optimistic outlook on life will create a satisfying body image within our selves. Therefore, no extreme action will have to be taken to modify our body. Positive body modification involves adjusting the way we think and act. There are more useful ways to disperse of money than to create false images of who we really are. As soon as a person loses this, body composition becomes miniscule to the real problems they’ll incur.
