Prostitution as a profession is more than the seemingly simple delivery of sexual favors in exchange for money. It is an industry that changes many lives, and can have negative effect on those directly involved in it. Physical and emotional abuse as well as drug use is often associated with these lifestyles. Women make up the gender majority of sex workers and as such stand to suffer the most, unfortunately the measures that are being taken now are simply not acceptable. Due to the illegal status of prostitution, these individuals are being left in the margins of society needlessly and as a result of this unchecked abuse the profession has been converted into a tool for men to exploit women without fear of retribution. If we were to base our planning and prevention on history we would be prudent not to assume that the issue of prostitution will go away on its own, if we cannot completely stop it from occurring than we should take measures to protect and monitor those implicated.An average of $7.5 million is spent every year in Switzerland on prostitution control, this number is only augmenting with little to no change in the number of prostitutes arrested (www.bern.ch)).Many reformers feel that this money could be better spent
There are three specific points of sex selling that are currently major problems that may be decrease somewhat by the decriminalization or regulation of these acts. Nevertheless, roughly 70% of sex workers arrested are women. Not all countries are willing to implement a decriminalizing reform; The Norwegian Trade Union has long been fighting this implementation, especially in South East Asia. Whatever means that is available to that family or individual. Firstly if something is not criminal than it is thought off assumed that it is somewhat accepted by that society, or at the very least some of the negative causes are lost in its decriminalization. Most of the criminal activity that surrounds this profession can be eradicated people feel empowered by the recognition that governments make their stand tolerable. This could be due to the psychological effects forced prostitution has on these women, the person abused might feel safer with their oppressors than in an unknown world with unknown dangers. Netherlands and Denmark have both been in the forefront of this debate of tolerating prostitution. How can you tell a little girl that women are allowed to sell their bodies but that they should try o avoid it by any means necessary? Perhaps in the same way those children are told not go sky diving, getting cosmetic surgery or tattoos. These women are being emotionally, psychologically and physically assaulted without enough resources at their disposal and only about 7% of them seeking help.
