Richard Rodriguez and Adrienne

             Richard Rodriguez and Adrienne Rich were both rebels in a certain sense. Rodriguez was a Mexican American who was gay, Catholic (if possible) and a democrat. He was breaking different customs and acting different then society thought he should act. Adrienne Rich was a big feminist who had very strong views about women being oppressed there whole lives. Rich believed that women needed to use re-vision for self knowledge. They have to search for their identity because their in a male dominated society. Rich and Rodriguez both were out of the ordinary and had a lot different views then other people.
             Rich in When we Dead Awaken: Writing as Re-Vision says "And this drive to self-knowledge, for women, is more than a search for identity: it is part of our refusal of the self-destructiveness of male-dominated society." Rich believes in re-vision as a way of getting away from the repression women have suffered. Rodriguez was repressed in a different way then Rich was. He was forced to be bi-lingual and he was against this. Richard respected his nuns and wanted to be like them because they spoke very good English and they were well respected. Richard was being oppressed by his culture also in my opinion. He tried very hard to talk like the nuns and lose his Spanish accent. Richard didn't want to be like his Mexican immigrant parents.
             Richard broke a lot of different traditions that weren't normal for a person like him. Rodriguez said in The Achievement Desire "Shyly I'd smile, never betraying my sense of the irony: I was not proud of mother and father. I was embarrassed by their lack of education." Richard felt like he was being held down by his parents so he wanted to be different then them. Richard read so much so he could be really smart and learn good English.
