Advancement in Modern Technolo

"Where has God gone?" he cried. "I shall tell you. We have killed him - you and I. We are his murderers. But how have we done this? How were we able to drink up the sea? Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon? What did we do when we unchained the earth from its sun? Whither is it moving now? Whither are we moving now? Away from all suns? Are we not perpetually falling? Backward, sideward, forward, in all directions . . .Do we not hear anything yet of the noise of the gravediggers who are burying God? Do we not smell anything yet of God's decomposition? Gods too decompose. God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him.

Looking on the dawn of the 21st century, we see the infinity possibilities in technology as our knowledge and understanding of these things continue to grow. As it seems, our rapid movement forward to satisfy man?s need to know and explain the unexplainable has left us with many unanswered inevitable questions about mans plight in modern technology. To what cause does mankind attribute its need for scientific dominance over all things natural? Is it simply the pursuit of truth or a race toward immortality that propels science to its depths? What are the limits to sc

. . .
Most assuredly to add to the quality of life.

Inaddition to how we can deal with the social implications of science and technology, we also need to look to the scientists and the role they play in the development and implementation of such technologies. Scientists separate themselves and the science from humanity as stated in John Cornwell?s article Hitler?s Scientists, ? Scientists . Indoctrinating laws and policies to slow or deter certain kinds of use of Genetic research, biological and chemical weapons, and robotics is one step, but it ultimately boils down to us the consumer of these genetically enhanced or technologically advanced products. In agreeance with Cornwell, a true scientist?s role in society is to have a moral and ethical obligation to protect the common good of humanity irregardless of pressures big business and/or government ties. An example of this is with Jeffery Wigand. However, it is not the knowledge of, as suggested by Bill Joy, that needs to be regulated yet the use of such knowledge and its dissemination that should be. Our thirst for the ?new? has fueled the rapid advancement of modern technologies in genetics, biochemical engineering, nanotechnologies, robotics even weapons of mass destruction (WMD). Surely, it would be difficult to regulate the knowledge of a certain technology, for example biogenetic research on cloning. The difficulty with monitoring and limiting public access to certain kinds of genetic, bio and nanotechnologies seems to be with patent laws (or the lack thereof), and intellectual property rights as these are things outside of military restrictions would alleviate some of the problem with unethical use. Unlike military uses of nuclear, biological, and other technologies, commercial use and research are not as easily monitored. The problem with these types of sciences are widely known and unregulated. Considering this, who is to say when enough is enough when faced with an ever-changing technological society? We are?the scientists adhering to the moral and ethical standards of humanity, and those who implement the technological advancements to our society. Mainly because of private facilities that specialize in a particular science such as genetics.
