Computer Crimes and Cyber Criminals

             Did you know that you've probably committed a computer crime, and might not even have known? In fact, you really don't have to know much about computers to commit a computer crime. Did you know every time you burn a CD you are committing a crime; or when you cut and paste a picture of text from the web you are committing a crime? With today's high-speed Internet connections it makes committing a computer crime fast, taking only a matter of seconds. What is a computer crime? A computer crime is any crime that takes place using a computer as a key instrument in that crime. Some well-known computer crimes are hacking, cracking, plagiarism, and fraud. There are so many possible computer crimes I cannot begin to list them all. If you just think this is a bunch of techno junk and it doesn't concern you, well guess what? You could fall victim to a malicious computer crime costing you your computer, your privacy, and even your bank account. If you don't think it's possible, think again.
             First of all computer crimes go both ways. You can commit a computer crime that hurts someone else. These crimes are plagiarism, and data piracy. In researching the topic of computer crimes I came across many websites offering or selling full written high school and college-level reports on this and many other topics. Also with the writings of just about every author and news writer it is very easy to copy their words and pass them off as yours. Data and software piracy has been around since almost the beginning of the Internet. What happens is a computer thief buys a CD of music, data, or software, and extracts the data and sells it or distributes it freely hurting the companies who produce it. The first well-known case of music piracy started when a 19-year-old college freshman created Napster. Napster was the first file-sharing program designed to let its users download music from each other. Napster later lost a lawsuit over its violations of copyright...
