             P-FLAG is an organization that has the purpose of educating people about gays and lesbians. There are 8000 members of and 20 chapters, it was started in 1972 because of a gay man who was attacked. We had 4 speakers come in and talk to us about their experiences. There was a gay man, named Alex, 2 lesbian women, Alicia and Amy, and an older women who has a gay daughter, her name was Jeanne. They all came in and told us about their different experiences growing up and going through life. They made it sound like it has been a very tough life, and I don't doubt it was. But they made it very clear, that it isn't a choice, and it isn't something they can help. It is how they are and how they will always be.
             Alex told us all about his life before he came out of the closet. He tried to lead a normal life, but he always knew he was different. He really fought hard to try to make a normal life. He was in sports in high school, and he dated women. He even went so far as to get married and have children. He admitted that having children with his wife was tough because it was hard to become physically aroused by her. However, he says that he would never give up his son for anything. His son is not gay but is very acceptable of his fathers way of life. He actually came up to his father when he was 15 and said "dad, I'm not gay, I'm straight."
             We then listened to Alicia, who also tried to lead a normal life. She was married to a man for a few years and had to children with him. At first she thought it was a phase she was going through but she soon realized it was just the way she was. She now has a life partner that she is much happier with, even though she says she still loves her husband. She loves her kids and they are very accepting of her lifestyle as well. Even her husband knows that she is what she is and she is happy with it.
