lizzie borden
It is improbable for Lizzie Borden to have committed the crime of slaughtering both of her parents. Contrary to popular belief, and American folklore, direct evidence against Lizzie is scant and much of the prosecutions case unfounded. There was not a spot of blood on Lizzie's clothing. Yes, there was one drop of blood on her skirt, as large as the head of a small pin. This can simply be explained by the fact that Miss Borden had her period at that time. A professor who helped with the case said he "did not know whether the blood on the slip was or was not menstrual blood"(Law Buzz). There was no blood on her hair. How could she have murdered her parents without getting blood on her hair? Dr. Draper, one of the witnesses called by the defense, testified that it is "almost impossible to get blood out of the hair and if she had tried, her hair would have been wet"(Law Buzz). Anybody close to Lizzie, post murder, would have noticed wet hair and said so in his or her testimony, but that was never mentioned. It is reported that Lizzie was going up and down the stairs about 9 a.m., around the time Mrs. Borden would have been making the bed. It is also said that on a certain step of the staircase, if you look into the guest room yo
Where did he go? He could have hidden upstairs to the spare room, or in the hall closet or the sitting-room closet, or in the pantry. Some say she wore a dark blue dress, others say it was white. And then came down to greet her father, why was she not covered with blood? Of course the prosecution would say she changed her dress. Lizzie was upstairs or downstairs in the cellar: "I was going to finish my ironing; my flats were not hot"(Law Buzz). The suggestion that Lizzie was running around changing and burning clothing the morning she allegedly killed her parents is highly improbable. And if she killed her father, why would she put the original dress back on or put on a third fresh dress? If she used a third dress, then there were two dresses to burn and get rid of instead of one. But, people who saw Lizzie that day disagreed about what she was wearing. She later mentioned to Bridget she was in the backyard at the time of the murder. Lizzie stated later she was in the barn for twenty or thirty minutes "trying to find a piece of tin or iron to fix a damaged screen"(Crime Library). Lizzie said she thought she heard her stepmother come in to the house while she was in the yard.
