Survey of Transport Geography
Pooley, Colin G., Jean Turnbull. Modal choice and modal change: The journey to work in Britain since 1890. Journal of Transport Geography, 8:11-24 In the chosen article the main idea was to show how since 1890 until present day how the journey to work using different transportation methods on a day to day basis has changed as technology has changed. Furthermore, to illustrate how changes in transportation policies have changed because of the modal change in transportation. It is ultimately related to the study of transportation geography because the article illustrates how the need for bigger and better infrastructure was needed to accommodate the modal change in ways people journey to work. The subject matter of the article is important because it focuses on the impacts of the industrial revolution on modes of transportation bo
It is also important because the information discovered in the article can also provide a basis for policies in developing countries in terms of infrastructure and regulations surrounding transportation. Therefore, policies created for modern day transportation must accommodate all forms of transport to accommodate everyone and there choices on how to commute to and from work. Lastly, the voiced safety concerns of public transportation makes it hard for people to just leave there cars at home. Lastly, by placing advertisements at large employers and the local press to find people who were interested in the research and then setup interviews with those who were interested. Thirdly, and the largest group consisted of genealogists and family historians who where used in pervious study. Next 90 separate semi-structured interviews were conducted. It also addresses how policies affecting transportation had to change in order to keep up with the changing modes of transportation. Furthermore, there is a large individual variability meaning while one mode of transport is good for one person it many not suit another. Another problem is that not enough data could be collected from the 1890's and recorded statistic data had to be used. From the 1890's to the 1930's peoples principal means of transportation was walking with bicycle use close behind. To correct this, the researchers over sampled respondents in lower status occupations. From the 1960's until present time the use of automobiles became the dominant means of transportation to and from work, while walking to work declined even further and so to travel by bicycle and bus but train and subway use remained about the same. Firstly, that London had the best developed urban transport system consisting of subways and bus systems. The policy implications of these changes in modes of transport are that even through time new technologies and new ways of transportation evolved because of safety reasons people are reluctant to switch from one mode of transportation to another.
