Asthma

             Asthma has become one of the biggest problems in the world today. It is found everywhere, whether in large cities or out in the country. Asthma is a chronic disease that is discussed throughout the world. There are some very important things about asthma such as the definition, symptoms, effects that trigger asthma attacks, and treatment for the disease.
             About six percent of the total population in the United States, or close to fifteen million people, are currently dealing with asthma (Murphy). Asthma is an inflammatory disorder of the airways, characterized by periodic attacks of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. This is the most common serious chronic disease among children in this country (Murphy). Currently this disease affects nearly five million youngsters under the age of eighteen, or about one child in twenty. Three to five percent of adults and seven to ten percent of children have asthma. Half of the people with asthma develop it before age ten, and most develop it before age thirty. Asthma symptoms can decrease over time, especially in children. Many people with asthma have a family history of allergies, such as hay fever or eczema. Others have no history of allergies or evidence of allergic problems. What really causes an asthma attack is an exaggerated reaction to some substance that doesn't bother most other people (Ward).
             There are many different symptoms of asthma. One of the first signs is wheezing. Usually this begins suddenly. It may be worse at night or early morning. this is aggravated by exposure to cold air, exercise, and heartburn. Another symptom is coughing, No sputum production does not necessarily mean that you have asthma, nor does sputum production mean that you have asthma.
