The Importance of the Arts

             The arts can teach us about every historical period through music, visual arts, literature, dance, and drama. Arts provide opportunities for self-expression, bringing the inner world into the outer world. In his essay "Don't Ignore The Arts," Harold M. Williams says that the language of arts is universal and is acknowledged or admired in every culture. He also says that arts help us understand the people who lived a hundred years ago and learn the history of humanity. They create a connection between instruction and practical application--leading to deep understanding. Harold questions that if the arts play a significant role in human life, then arts should also be the central source of study in education or American schools. I agree with the views of the author.
             In his essay, Williams gives an example of a physicist Richard Feynman who learned arts (how to draw) at forty-four. The physicist who did not draw well in high school became good at it later in life. This example reveals that the arts can be learned and practiced at any time. A person who is not good at drawing should not give up but keep on practicing. For instance, my uncle, a software engineer in India, was very creative in designing cars in his high school. The only problem he faced to express his ideas was that he was evil in the drawing. He was not good at drawing because his school system did not offer classes in removing until the tenth grade. So, he quit designing and became a software engineer. He used to work in a computer company called "Infosys" and got laid off at the age of forty-nine. Then he applied for job in other computer companies, but all his efforts in vain. Then he thought to join an art school to learn how to draw. He studied their for four years and achieved good drawing skills. Now, he became perfect in drawing and wanted to fulfill his high school dream of designing cars.
