A Rose For Emily

            The story A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner in my opinion was a very interesting story. The story was about an old and troubled woman named Emily Grierson who, since her father's death, had become one of the town's obligations and also one of its problems. Emily a very stubborn old lady who refused to pay her taxes because of a little tale that Colonel Sartoris who was the mayor at the time had told her. He told her that her father had lent the town some money and because of it in a way of paying her back all of her taxes were remitted. Faulkner portrayed Emily's character to be very stubborn and by the end made people think she was crazy. My thoughts are leaning toward that she is not crazy, that's too strong of a word, but rather disturbed. He develops this through many things but the main thing was by her actions to different situations and the way she lived her life.
             In the story I noticed that Emily's mother is never mentioned. That gives me the impression that she is dead. If you look at the pocessivness that Emily's father displays toward her, it leads you to think that her mother probably died in childbirth and that Emily was his last link to his late wife and no one was going to take her away. This is the root of Emily's problems. She is made out to be a virtual prisoner in her house and her father was the warden. It is said that he would chase the boys away, a clear indication of her father's desire to never let Emily go. On top of that it leads you to believe that if he could have so much control in the area of her love life and that she was rarely seen outside, then her father must have controlled nearly every aspect if her life.
             As with most people who are isolated from the outside world and kept from having any kind of social life, her father became her only social link and thus her life. I don't think she ever learned to live for herself. This will explain why...
