Socialisation of Children

In my essay I will discuss the view that the socialisation of a child is a two way process. I will talk about the primary and secondary socialisation and refer to a story of two feral children. Item A tells us, "Socialisation is the process whereby the helpless infant gradually becomes a self-aware, knowledgeable person, skilled in the ways of his/her culture." Socialisation takes place through one's whole life as you are always learning new skills, values, and norms. In 1918 two infant girls who where lost in a jungle in India. Feral, or wild children are thoses who, for whatever reason, are not brought up by humans. Theses children where brought up by a pack of wolves. There girls where aged between 5-7 years old. When the girls where found they where like animals, they where naked and ran in a sort of stooped crouch, like our prehistoric ancestors. The girls where afraid oh humans, they couldn't talk, laugh, or sing. They ate by pushing their faces into a bowl, and lapped up water instead of using a glass.Primary socialisation is people in the family (specifically parents) and friends that help teach a child values and norms. Values are widely accepted beliefs about the world, others, and oneself. An example of a value

Other programs such as Buffy the Vampire Salyer openly advertises witchcraft, as a result a lot of teenagers have turned to black magic. Learning to trust one another is important in society, without trust no relationship, whether it be a friendship or a partnership would work. Teachers give rewards for good behaviour and sanctions for bad behaviour, much like parents. Norms and values can be taught by all of the above groups. Magazines on specific topics such as Horse riding, or science will teach one more facts and opinions. The norm would be not dropping the litter. School teaches one how to interact with people of a different status. Grandparents would be fairly similar to parents, however grandparents would teach children more specific norms and values that parents may not teach. This is a very successful way of teaching values and norms and most people will remember then their whole life. Schools are one on the biggest agents of socialisation, teaching one not only about maths, science, or history but also about how to cope in the real world. Books can take one into another world and one can discover things that one never knew. Learning how to play a sport of some sort may be taught to one by other family members, for boys it may be football and for girls it could by swimming.
