On December 8th, 1941, the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States became involved in World War II. Americans saw freedom and independence as their goal in which was finally attained. The United States would not be seen as great of a superpower without the three foreign policies of imperialism, isolationism, and containment. As in starting a new lifestyle, the US wanted to stay out of foreign affairs with the British (Document 3). The Containment Policy is defined as the US policy created to stop the spread of Communism. Their leader, Stalin, felt the need to control bordering nations in Eastern Europe. A policy such as isolationism may come back as a key factor in adapting to varying times in the US. An example of this is the Panama Canal. The United States would be a self-sufficient nation, and thrive off their land. The two alliances never went into combat, although if Communist influences of Eastern Europe came upon Western Europe, the US would have aided the allied nation for the cause of the Containment Policy. At the wars end, the Treaty of Paris was proposed. President Truman believed in the Domino Theory, in which if one country fell to Communism, they would all fall. They aided Panama financially by taking over the area of land. After the sinking of the Battleship Maine in Havana harbor, the United States declared war on Spain (April 25, 1898). 12 billion was to be spent to rebuild Europe.
