Cell Phones
Open with Impact: 570,000 injuries a year and 1.5 million crashes resulting in property damage can be blamed on wireless phone use according to an study at Harvard's University Center for Risk Analysis.Focus: This number is only going to grow with the increasing use of cell phones. Not only have these wireless phones caused a problem on the road, but they are also becoming very annoying in public, in places such as restaurants. So, today I am here to persuade you to limit cell phone use, especially when driving and in restaurants.Connect with Audience: How many of you own cell phones? That's kind of what I thought...almost everyone. I'd say there are a good majority of you that also talk on those cell phones when driving. Preview: In persuading you to limit the amount of cell phone use, I am going to cover three main areas. One of course would be the issue of driving while on the cell phone. Another will be about the effects of cell phones in restaurants, and the final main idea will cover some of the laws that are currently in place, and a few that should be implemented.Driving: A new study out of the University of North Carolina shows that people on cell phones are
Isn't this ridiculous that they need to do this? If you can't sit down and enjoy a nice meal for an hour or so without talking on your cell phone, you really do need help. Although, if people used common sense and didn't talk while driving, we wouldn't have to worry about it. They found a lot of crashes occured when people were just talking on the phone, but they also found that some occured when reaching for their phone, dialing their phone, or answering their phone. The average time spent on the phone while driving according to this survey was 14 1/2 minutes. This is backed up even more with a study from the University of Utah. Whether hand held or hands free, the study showed using either of them lead to poor driving performance. In order for these laws to work, there needs to be strict enforcement. There are no studies out there that show hands free devices have a greater safety advantage than regular hand helds. Secondly, there is the trying to solve the problem of cell phones in restaurants. Signpost: So what exactly is being done to solve these problems you ask?Laws: At this point there are not too many strictly enforced laws on driving while on cell phones. We must get more laws in place with stiffer penalties. Conclusion: In conclusion, I hoped you were able to see the problems cell phones are causing while driving and in restaurants. Signpost: Not only are cell phones problems while driving, but we also need to look at how distracting they are in restaurants.
