In Our Time

            From childhood to adulthood, life's responsibilities become greater each passing year. At life's beginning, as a baby, everything is provided and there are no responsibilities of someone at this age. Then, as a young child, responsibilities and expectations increase as being potty trained and feeding begin to be done without assistance. Next, when going to school, doing homework, dealing with friends, and ideals and values begin to form an older child takes on a few more of life's daily challenges. As an adolescent education, friendships, and ones future come into focus and the required actions to achieve one's lifetime goals are initiated. It is during this stage that an individual is faced with many important decisions that will take effect throughout life. A stable job must be established as a source of income to provide daily needs. Marriage, further education, and owning property further burden an individual during this period of life. This evolution of responsibility is ignored sometimes and some individuals have great difficulty in taking on these new, heavy responsibilities life lays upon them as they struggle between the stages of childhood and adulthood. Nick Krebs is that individual which cannot let go of his childish ways. Ernest Hemingway's The Three Day Blow, a selection from In Our Time, gives insight to Nick's struggle with responsibility on his way to adulthood. Nick is caught between the responsibilities and pleasures of becoming an adult while trying to retain the mentality of being just a kid due to his friendship with Bill.
