Elisa portrays herself in the chrysanthemums she grows, the way she dresses, and the scissor sharpener she meets. She goes on a semi quest to see if she is ready to be a woman who prospers in a man's world. Elisa has what her mother called planters hands. She has a garden that she works in each day and among the plants she has planted one stands out above the rest, her chrysanthemums. She realizes that what he does is something she could do also. She does this to keep the man at her place for as long as she can. What could stop her? Elisa repeats how she can fix her own pots and sharpen her own scissors when the man asks for work. She roughens herself up to erode the beauty and soft skin she was born with. Immediately she becomes query and asks the man of his profession. Her body was blocked and heavy from the clothes she wore. She tries to hide herself or wear a mask over herself to look like a man. So, no matter what she does it continues to be a battle everyday to become something she is not allowed to be, a woman in a man's world. She can become as big and beautiful as she wants just like the chrysanthemums. In the end she realizes she is a woman and cannot change so why hide it. Elisa becomes scared to leave, as the question is can I make it in a man's world or is my place here in the garden? She chooses the garden. She can see a light as he leaves which represents her passion to get out of her little fenced in area. When the man comes by and becomes interested in her chrysanthemums and wants one she becomes excited and jumps at the opportunity to give him one. In the long run she is just a woman.
