Antebelum period: consequences
Times where changing in more ways that one during the antebellum period in America. The biggest factor that came about was industrialization and the money that flowed in from it. Because of this change that money brought about in the minds of the people living in this country, social changes had to also change in order to meet the demands of the people that were acquiring wealth at an alarming rate. This new wealth brought much prosperity to the nation which in return, demanded an over all "new way of life" for those who were filling their bank accounts. Of course there was a downfall to this quick accumulation of money, some people became very uncomfortable with watching their own neighbors change literally over night and leave all of their values and beliefs behind. The main dilemma is on one side religion, and the other, class-level. It seems that at the same time that more and more people were getting wealthy, there were the same number of people declaring that the end of the world was near. These people who turned their back to the upscale society felt that something needed to be done if all of these lost souls in the city where going to be able to go to heaven. In John Kasson's book known as "Rudeness & Ci
These people instead decided that adaptation would be best for no other reason than perhaps having a fear of being left behind. Today, we as college students look back on what was happening in the city life and laugh at what these people did and sacrificed in order to be able to feel that they belonged to something. On the other side of the token, there are still those who feel that they need to join what we might consider a "cult" or a "following" to find what they are really all about such as Matthias and Pierson along and numerous others who went to other communities as Oneida and New Harmony. I hate to mention a Sylvester Stalone movie but the one that he plays a future cop in, Demolition Man they have the "three seashells" and find that it is funny that we used to use toilet paper in the past. He began on a farm doing what all people did in the rural lands of America until he decided that a move to the city to oversee his business would be the best thing for his family. When those in the clergy find that he is not only violent to his family and friends, but is so toward his wife, the Church turns its' back on Matthias. We all know that this rarely happens and in most cases, these kids who venture off and do such things as radical as this, end up either homeless or in a career making movies that their mothers would not approve of. This new life of evil and drunkenness that he was faced with everyday took its toll on Matthias. This problem of money and over crowded streets can be seen throughout the world when industrialization and wealth accumulate at such a rate that the city and the people who live in it cannot catch up. The reasons for men and women doing strange things with their lives such as Matthias can be directly linked to money in the cities of America. Best put, it has just always just been there perhaps for no other reason than for us as a civilization to flourish and prosper. I believe that those who adapted and welcomed this new change did so with open minds. In actual fact, we must look around our own society and realize that we too are doing that may seem very strange and unusual for no other reason than to belong. This lifestyle was relatively good for those who wanted to feel that they needed to belong to something in life.
