Thomas Edison

American inventor born in 1847, one of the greatest inventors of all time. Edison began to work at an early age and continued to work right up until his death. Thought out his long career he had more than 1000 patents. Some of his bigger inventions were the electric light, the motion picture camera and the phonoghraph. In this paper I will talk about the more important inventions there pourpse and there affect on society.Edison was born in Milan, Ohio on February 11, 1847. He attended school for only three months, in Port Huron, Michigan. When he was 12 years old he began selling newspapers on the Grand Trunk Railway, devoting his spare time mainly to experimentation with printing presses and with electrical and mechanical apparatus. In 1862 he published a weekly, known as the Grand Trunk Herald, printing it in a freight car that also served as his laboratory. For saving the life of a station official's child, he was rewarded by being taught telegraphy. While working as a telegraph operator, he made his first important invention, a telegraphic repeating instrument that enabled messages to be transmitted automatically over a second line without the presence of an operator.

Within 3 years Edison constructed a studio for many people to watch the film at once, his studio utilized the sun for a clearer picture and the whole studio was on a pivoting device to follow the sun. Edison got an idea while working on the telephone, he thought he could use the same device that transfered sound on the telephone to record sound. Edison genetically engineered the plant to produce more rubber that it would usually. He developed detailed plans for an entire distribution system for electric power. By the time Edison had perfected his storage battery, he had spent million dollars and eight years on it. In the 20's it became apparent to Edison that the country didn't have a good supply of rubber, we relied heavily on imports for our rubber supply. Edison received many honors for his inventions including the French Legion of Honor, Italy made him a Grand Officer of the Crown in 1889, and he received awards from the governments of Chile, Britain, Japan and Russia. His idea was to get a wire hot enough to glow, after much trial and error Edison developed a high-resistance carbon-thread filament that glowed for 40 hours straight. Edison's first major achievement at Menlo Park was an improvement on the telephone. In the next four years he tested 17,000 different plants, finding rubber in 1,200 of them but worthwhile quantities in only about 40. We still use his basic ideas with our a lot of our electronics we take for granted. In the years to follow Edison produced a number of films introducing the public to his motion picture machines. Edison realized that widespread use of electric light bulbs would require an efficient system of delivering electricity to homes and businesses. Thomas Edison's inventions gave new industry to our country. First he invented a camera that took 40 pictures a second and had the film company develop a film that could handle this rate.
