Gun Control

             America is unique in many ways. One of the things that distinguishes the United States is its obsession with guns. Whether it is to protect the family, go hunting with, or just simply to be a bad ass, America loves its guns. However, that love leads to an extremely higher amount of gun related homicides per year when compared to similar free world countries. Why?
             The beginning of the answer lies in Americas individualistic society. American society is this way because of its obsession with its capitalist economy; the foundation of the United States. Capitalism is an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state. "The capitalist system encourages greed and depends on the constant race between a certain number of individuals to own the most wealth, to more or less whatever cost to those others, who for a number of reasons donìt succeed, from personal shortcomings or refusal to take advantage of their brethren to the simple lack of will"(http://www.skog.de/engreed.htm). The best example of capitalist exploitation took place during the Great Depression. Owners of corporate farms, would set ridiculously low wages for people who worked in the fields, including children, knowing they would have to accept it because jobs were so scarce. A present day example of capitalist exploitation, and thus American individualism, is Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart takes money out of local business and destroys many small towns buy sucking the "life" their down town shopping experience all for the gain of a few self absorbed CEOs (www.davelippman.com/walmart/whyihatewalmart.html). The residual effect of the individualism caused by capitalist greed, is apathy. People become so obsessed with increasing their wealth they stop caring about the quality of life around them and the result is unconnected communities.
