magic in the tempest

A storm erupts in the Mediterranean Sea. Alonso, the King of Naples, and members of his court are passengers on a ship that is destroyed in the sudden tempest. The passengers are separated in the sea, but all find safety on a magical and seemingly deserted island. The island is the home of the former Duke of Milan, Prospero, who had been set adrift 12 years earlier, with his young daughter Miranda, by his treacherous brother Antonio with the aid of Alonso. Over the years, with books supplied by Alonso's counselor, Gonzalo, and knowledge gained from the island, Prospero has learned magic. Prospero is aided by Ariel, a magical creature whom Prospero saved from a witch. Ariel can be seen only by Pro

Prospero confronts Alonso and his court with all that has occurred on the island. Ariel hears the plan and thwarts it. While Ferdinand is proving his mettle, the second group, made up of Alonso, his brother Sebastian, Antonio, and Gonzalo, wanders the island. Alonso sees the injustice he did Prospero, and agrees to return Prospero to his position as Duke of Milan. The play follows three of these groups. When they come upon Caliban, they have no idea what he is. Prospero puts Ferdinand to work at menial tasks to test his character. Before leaving the island, Prospero gives Ariel and Caliban their freedom. Prospero causes the survivors to come to shore in separate groups so that each group believes the others to have died in the storm. The third group of castaways includes Trinculo, a jester, and Stephano, a drunk-en butler. Prospero leads the royal party through a frustrating search for food. Ariel and the island goddesses preside over the nuptials. Miranda and Ferdinand are immediately drawn to one another. Prospero tells Ferdinand that he is worthy of Miranda and that Prospero will allow the two to marry.
