Press and Politics
Attitudes of different press to the withdrawal of the anti-subversion billIn this project, we are going to look into different attitudes of a number of newspapers in HK to the controversy issue C withdrawal of the anti-subversion bill, which sparked massive street protests and triggered the territory's worst political crisis since 1997. To make it clearer, it is a postponement of the legislation procedure of the national security bill only, but not a cancellation of the Article 23.First, we can take a look on the editorial of MingPao (see reference article no.1) on 2003-09-06. Actually, we can see the general attitude of newspapers in Hong Kong hold attitudes more or less similar. - We support the legislation of the Article 23 in the Basic Law -MingPao support the legislation, but more consultation and consideration is needed before the implementation. -؇ݸ-AǵALc"Ǹ˵AaL- the withdrawal of the national security bill - is wise, it meets the will of Hong Kong PeopleSo, the postponement of the bill is welcomed, and they generally think it can do goods to the economy. -҂fJe...^cз23-l^
This shows how they contempt the voice of the majority. The earliest article mentioned about that was on 2003-07-04 , ChongQing Wan Bao('cio)(See reference article no. f^гoF^٠h'n']Llһo[йcf1/2LowAKc-lAlthough there were many arguments and worries during the legislative process, and made half a million of citizens to go on the street for the July 1 Demonstration, generally the citizens do not reject the legislation of the Article 23. Conclusion:We can see that the press hold quite different attitudes to the withdrawal of the national security bill. MingPao just wrote a few words on this suspicion; however some newspapers do put emphasis on it. Actually almost all the press in Hong Kong put harsh criticism on the Hong Kong government. I think this totally explain why so many people from the media in HK went on the street. Ae`LصAfaƫ ƫŢN"Ac*AaAiLLƵAΞAyE*^moF- if the government does not change its working style of clistening to the supporters voice only', cmaking everyone either friends or enemies' and cIgnoring the citizen's voices', similar political crisis will still take place. They are generally divided into two groups, one blames the government, and one blames the citizens. 2) even put it in big words with big picture in the front page on that day (06-09-03). People in HK should not accept only the law that protect their right and freedom, but resist those to carry out their civil duties.
