The Existence of God
The Ontological, the Cosmological, and the Teleological Arguments have failed to prove to me the existence of God. Each of these arguments leaves out a lot of unanswered questions and they fail to prove what they have claimed to prove: that a God does exist. In this essay I plan to prove that these arguments are lacking the proof needed to show that there is a God.In the Ontological Argument, St. Anselm attempts to prove that God exists because of his essence. St. Anselm said that God could either exist just in the mind, or he could exist both in the mind and outside of the mind. He also claims that God is that then which nothing greater can be conceived. And, since the concept of God existing both in the mind and outside the mind is far much greater than God existing just in the mind, God must truly exist. There are many problems with St. Anselm's Ontological Argument. First of all, just because we can have a concept of something doesn't mean that it has to exist. Gaunilo said it best when he used the island example to prove St. Anselm wrong. He told his readers to think of the greatest, or most perfect, conceivable island; an island that most likely does not exist. And pretend for just a moment "that this island has an inesti
Nonexistence is boundless, timeless, omnipresent, and simple, while existence is defined by its limitations. Aquinas also says that from our senses we know that some things are in motion. And, since no thing can be its own efficient cause, "it is necessary to admit a first efficient cause, to which everyone gives the name of God. Each argument has a few ideas and concepts that I can agree with, but there isn't one of these arguments that I can say has complete believability. Anselm's Ontological Argument is that who says that we can not conceive of anything greater than God existing both in the mind and outside of the mind. Anselm because we can conceive of this great island, it must exist. Each of these arguments has failed to prove to me that a God does exist. The elements of existence are asymmetric and interact because of their imperfections. In fact, it has been "argued that nonexistence is greater and more perfect than existence. Since the universe is finite, its Designer needs only to be finite.
