my irish heritage

             What is my heritage? Where did I come from? Am I descended from one culture or am I a cornucopia of different cultures? Heritage has never sparked my interest; therefore, I know very little about my family history. However, I do know that my maternal grandmother is originally from Ireland, making me part Irish. Due to the short amount of time allotted for this paper, I was unable to trace back my heritage to see if I am from any other cultures. In this case, I will attempt to explain the small amount of information that I have acquired over time concerning the Irish traditions of my family.
             In search of a better life, my ancestors came to America after the potato famine of 1849. Not only did they come looking for food, but they also came to escape religious persecution from the English. Because of their noble movement, future generations are able to experience an enjoyable life here in the U.S. Although my heritage is not diverse and does not represent the "melting pot", I still consider myself a true American. Born and raised in the United States, there is no doubt in my mind that I am anything other than American. I am not as educated about my past as I should be, but I do understand and respect the fact that
             my life has benefited because of my Ancestors decision to move to America. For this reason, I consider myself American.
             Saint Patrick's Day is a religious holiday honoring Saint Patrick, the missionary credited with converting the Irish to Christianity. Saint Patrick was called the apostle of Ireland. The color green is associated with this holiday because it is the color of spring, Ireland, and the shamrock. Shamrock, a member of the clover family, was used by Patrick to explain the mystery of the Trinity which is represented by the three leaves of the shamrock (the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit).
